What Is Bamboo-Aged Puer?

Puer is a post-fermented tea from Yunnan Province, China, prized for its ability to develop in complexity over decades of ageing. In this form, the tea has been packed inside a bamboo stick and aged - the bamboo imparting its own subtle flavour note while protecting and slowly transforming the tea within. No two sticks are identical; this is entirely handmade.

How to Open & Brew Bamboo Puer

Opening the stick: Method 1 (recommended): Place a clean flat-head screwdriver or chisel against the edge of the upright stick. Carefully hammer until the stick splits. Break apart by hand to access the tea - some will be loose, some compressed.Method 2: Saw the stick open lengthways with caution.Method 3: Use a long sharp tool or metal chopstick to extract tea from inside the stick. Note: this method may not release all of the tea.

Brewing:

• Ratio: 2g tea per 100ml water
• Temperature: Boiling (100°C)
• Rinse: Pour boiling water over the tea for 5 seconds, then discard
• Steep time: 4 minutes for the first brew; adjust subsequent brews to taste
• Re-steeps: Up to 5 brews per day - each evolving in character

For compressed sections: Break apart carefully with a sharp tool before brewing, or extend the first steep time as you would for a puer toucha.
